Hamster Food

When you have a pet hamster you must know what you need to feed the pet every day. The diet of a pet in extremely necessary and unhealthy diet can lead to the pet getting severely ill. Its better that you do a little bit of research about hamster eating habits and healthy diet for hamsters even before you get one as a pet.

A very important point to remember is that any types of food that contains a lot of sugar should never be served to your hamster because hamsters are prone to getting diabetes. Whenever you introduce some new food to your pet’s diet keep it to a minimal amount as any new sort of food can cause stomach upset. Once they get used to the new food then only should they be given larger amounts of that.

In case of vegetable or fruits you need to make sure that they are rinsed and washed over and over again so that they carry no pesticides along with them when eaten by your dear pet. Various sorts of veggies that a hamster loves are peas, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, sweet potatoes, turnip, cucumbers, green beans, spinach, celery, dandelion leaves, squash etc. The fruits that they love and enjoy are strawberries, mango, seedless grapes and apples, banana, melon, lychee, blueberries etc.

Sufficient amount of protein also needs to be present in the diet chart of your pet hamster and you can get the supply of these protein based food items from the various pet shops. They eat mealworms, grasshoppers, eggs, plain tofu, cooked chicken or cooked turkey, low fat cheese etc. Other types of food include cooked plain rice, squash seed, soya beans, nutritional yeast, lentils, alfafa, baby food, dry toast etc.

Apart from the food chart what you must remember is what sort of food you should avoid. This can be very important because in case your pet gets to eat something that it shouldn’t it can fall sick or get diarrhea. Among the items that you should avoid lie – chocolates, chips, junk food, candies, apple seeds, pickles, lemon, spices, garlic, jams, eggplant, cherry stone etc.

It is also important to fix a particular time for each meal of the hamster. Some doctors say that a morning meal is the best and some claim that evening meal is better. Whichever is a better option for you make sure that you stick to it because hamsters like to follow the routine. You might ask how much food you ought to feed the hamster – the answer is that as much as the hamster can take.

Providing ample amount of vitamins and minerals is also a must. In case the hamster is not prone to eating veggies that are rich in vitamins you should make sure to get vitamin and mineral supplements and provide it at a regular dosage. Water needs to be provided within a water bottle because dishes can easily be tipped over by the pet. A balanced diet would keep your pet fit and healthy.
