Large Hamster Cage

Most hamsters require a large space to move around in, as they are very active creatures. Unfortunately, a lot of people do not realize it is important to have a large hamster cage and very often buy a cage that is not suitable for the size of the hamster, let alone the hamster accessories that need to go with the cage and hamster. A smaller cage is often more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but can have disastrous consequences to the health of your hamster.

It is important to remember that hamsters come in different sizes as well, so the larger types of hamsters obviously need a larger cage. Also important to remember that it is recommended that only one hamster should be kept per cage.

Many cages also come with a wheel that is too small for a full grown hamster, so it is recommended to get an 8” wheel, so therefore please ensure that the cage is large enough for an 8” wheel!

It is recommended to get a cage that is at least one cubic foot in size for a smaller breed hamster, and anything bigger than that is desirable. Hamster loves space, and the more hamster accessories you can put in the cage with them that they can burrow in and play with, the more fun they have.

Another alternative to having the traditional wire cage is to use a glass terrarium or aquarium that has sufficient ventilation, and a nice big one is a great alternative to a large hamster cage. The glass walls and flooring makes cleaning easier and reduces the risk of injury as well. The only draw-back in having a solid sided cage is the attachments for water bottle and wheel. These are easy to solve by either attaching them with Velcro, or getting the free standing variety.

A large hamster cage need not be expensive and often you can make your own one inexpensively. Large storage containers of the hard plastic variety can be used, and instead of the lid, wire mesh can be used to ensure proper ventilation. Wooden cages with mesh over the door in the front is another alternative, but make sure the wood is not of a soft variety that the hamster can chew through over time, and also importantly ensure that the wood is untreated. Treated wood can sometimes be toxic to rodents.

A large hamster cage has also an added benefit for hamsters, as they are normally healthier living in a larger space, and they are less prone to stress and cage paralysis, which is quite common amongst hamsters living in smaller cages and do not receive adequate exercise.

When choosing a large hamster cage, take careful note of the width of the bars as well, as it would not be suitable to have a cage with the spacing too large and to have a smaller species of hamster that could easily slip through the bars and escape, or injure itself. It is important to do as much research as possible before deciding to by a large hamster cage.
